Backstage with Katie Quinn

English version: Hello dears, everyone of you knows the world-famous Victoria’s Secret Show and of course the angels like Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanpole and so on. How can they look so amazing? The show takes place in winter … so how can they look perfectly tanned as if they just returned from their vacations on Hawaii?!

Katie Quinn, the leading body make up artist for the show, told me the secret behind Victoria’s Secret. She is the founder of the Kona Tanning company and knows everything about airbrushed spray tanning and body contouring. In 2005 the owners Katie and Kenny  created their first tanning products in their kitchen in Orange County. Since then they became more and more successful with their company. Besides working for Victoria’s secret they applied their wonderful products on famous faces for TV, film and of course the VS show.

Katie is a pionier in spray tanning. Before she opened her own studio in a gym she had a full time job. In her free time (before work, during lunch breaks, in the evenings and on the week ends) she tanned her costumers and convinced them of spray tanning.

When Katie realized that she works even better after establishing goals for herself, she set the biggest goal someone in this industry could imagine: She wanted to work as the lead body make up artist for the Victoria’s Secret Show, and she was willing to work hard for it. Some years later, in 2009, her dream came true:

 She tanned a Victoria’s Secret model for a catalog photo shooting. Later this year she tanned the famous angels for the Victoria’s Secret show for the first time. After that she was asked to work for the following fashion shows and many photo shootings. In 2012 another dream came true: Tom Pecheux (her personal make up hero) asked her to lead his VS body makeup team.

Katie became a perfect example for her motto:

If you can dream it you can do it.

Because of her success magazines from all over the world payed attention to Katie and her work. She was featured in magazines such as SELF, Shape, Lucky, VOGUE, Cosmopolitan, Canadian Living and Women’s Health Magazines.

Meanwhile she has 10 years experience in this industry and achieved many things.  Katie created her own product line, founded her own company, wrote 2 books, works for famous shows and events and always believed in her dreams and worked hard to achieve them.

In my opinion she’s a really inspiring person. She’s not only attractive and successful but also a really nice person.

Juliastreetstyleblog: How do you feel by being featured in famous magazines from all over the world like Vogue and Cosmopolitan because of your work?
Katie: It’s a surreal feeling! To see my name on the pages of my favorite magazines makes me feel like I’m a part of their team! It’s so official, and such a little piece of history to me. I keep them all in one big memory box, and I can’t wait to show them off to my grandkids someday so I can say „See … your grandma knew her stuff!“

Juliastreetstyleblog: I would like to know how you felt before and after your first Victoria’s Secret Show.
Katie: Before the show, I could barely sleep! I stayed up all night checking and double-checking that my kit was in pristine shape, that everything was in order, and I didn’t leave anything to chance as far as equipment and products. Being from California, I was worried I wouldn’t fit in backstage with all the well-known New York City makeup artists and stylists, not to mention the models and celebrities! But the entire crew is one big friendly family, and I immediately felt comfortable. Once I got started applying body makeup, everything fell into place, and I could focus on doing what I LOVE to do, on the world’s best canvases! It was so much fun!

It’s a very long day, so after the show I was completely exhausted – I didn’t even go to the After Party! I went back to my hotel and fell asleep almost immediately. The next morning, the self-tanner I used on the models all day had fully developed, so I woke up with the tannest hands I’ve ever had!

Juliastreetstyleblog: Do you still feel the same after working for many VS shows?
Katie: I’m not nearly as nervous as I was for the first show, and it’s kind of a reunion seeing the artists and models that I’ve worked with during previous years! Everyone is so happy to be there, and there’s such a feeling of celebration all day long. You really get the feeling that everyone is working toward one goal, which makes it so easy to work together to get the best possible results. And the environment is so exciting and glamorous! I love getting there extra early to see how everything has been decorated, and to see the runway covered in glitter, and of course to go check out the wings! I love all of it! Everyone there is SO GOOD at what they do!

Juliastreetstyleblog: How is working with the angels for you?
Katie: I love working with the angels! They’re all so larger than life, but also so sweet and gracious. They make you feel like you’re doing the best work of your life, and that you’re a part of all the glamour and magic of the big day! And once they’re all dressed up for each look, and we’re doing final touches on shimmer and bronze, the energy backstage is pure celebration! It’s indescribable!

Juliastreetstyleblog: You achieved a lot. Do you have any goals for the future?
Katie: THANK YOU, that means a lot! Actually, I feel like I have too many goals! I’m loving creating training materials for other artists and spray tanners, so I want to add to my collection of books, videos and programs to share what I’ve learned in the thousands of tans I’ve done in the last 10 years. And I’m constantly adding to my long list of products that I want to create, and trying new techniques and tricks to make spray tanning even more natural and authentic! I doubt I’ll ever stop learning and testing new techniques and products. It’s what I love!!

Wie schaffen sie es immer, so perfekt auszusehen? Die legendäre Show findet im Winter statt … wie können sie so super gebräunt sein, als wären sie gerade aus ihrem Urlaub auf Hawaii zurückgekehrt?!

Katie Quinn, „Leading Body Make up Artist“ der Victoria’s Secret Show hat mir das Secret hinter Victoria’s Secret verraten. Katie ist die Gründerin der Kona Tanning Company und weiß einfach alles über Airbrush-Spray-Tanning (aufgesprühte Bräune)  und Body Contouring. 2005 haben die beiden Inhaber der Firma, Katie und Kenny, angefangen, ihre ersten Bräunungsprodukte in ihrer Küche in Orange County herzustellen. Seitdem sind sie mit ihrer Firma erfolgreich geworden. Neben der Victoria’s Secret Show waren die Produkte der beiden kreativen Köpfe auch bei Prominenten von Film und Fernehen gefragt.

Katie war eine der ersten, die an Spray Tanning glaubte, in einer Zeit, in der diese Art der Bräunung noch nicht so bekannt war. Zu der Zeit überzeugte sie ihre Kunden vom Spray Tanning noch während ihrer Freizeit – trotz Vollzeit-Job – also vor der Arbeit, während der Mittagspause, nach der Arbeit und an den Wochenenden. Später hat sie dann ihr eigenes Studio in einem Fitness Center eröffnet.

Als Katie realisiert hat, dass sie noch effektiver arbeitet, wenn sie sich Ziele setzt, hat sie sich das größte Ziel gesetzt, dass man sich in dieser Branche setzten konnte: sie wollte „Leading Body Make up Artist“ für die weltbekannte Victoria’s Secret Show werden und war bereit, hart dafür zu arbeiten. Einige Jahre später ging ihr Traum in Erfüllung und ihre Produkte  konnten  an den Angels auf dem Victoria’s Secret Catwalk bestaunt werden. 2012 ging ihr nächster Traum in Erfüllung: Tom Pecheux fragte sie, ob sie sein Victoia’s Secret Body Make up Team anführen möchte.

Heute ist die erfolgreiche „Spray Tannerin“ das perfekte Beispiel für ihr Motto:

If you can dream it you can do it

also „Wenn du es träumen kannst, kannst du es auch realisieren“. Durch ihren Erfolg sind bekannte Magazine weltweit auf sie und ihre Arbeit aufmerksam geworden, wie zum Beispiel SELF, Shape, Lucky, VOGUE, Cosmopolitan, Canadian Living und Women’s Health.

Mit ihren 10 Jahren Erfahrung in der Branche hat Katie viel erreicht: mittlerweile hat sie ihre eigene Produktlinie kreiert, ihre eigene Firma gegründet und 2 Bücher geschrieben. Katie arbeitet für bekannte Shows und Events und hat immer an ihre Ziele geglaubt und hart gearbeitet, um sie zu erreichen.

Ich finde, sie ist eine super inspirierende Person, die nicht nur attraktiv und erfolgreich ist, sondern auch unglaublich sympathisch.

Im folgenden exklusiven Interview mit Katie erfahrt ihr mehr über diese beeindruckende Frau und ihre Arbeit:

Juliastreetstyleblog: Wie fühlst du dich damit, dass Magazine weltweit über dich und deine Arbeit berichten?
Katie: Für mich fühlt es sich unwirklich an. Meinen Namen in meinen Lieblingsmagazinen zu lesen, gibt mir das Gefühl, Teil ihres Teams zu sein. Ich bewahre alle Artikel in einer Kiste auf, um sie später meinen Enkelkindern zu zeigen.

Juliastreetstyleblog: Ich würde gerne wissen, wie du dich vor und nach deiner ersten Victoria’s Secret Show gefühlt hast.
Katie: Vor meiner ersten Show konnte ich kaum schlafen. Ich habe immer wieder überlegt, ob ich irgendetwas vergessen habe oder ob noch irgendetwas an Produkten fehlt. Außerdem hatte ich Angst, nicht richtig ins Team zu passen – zwischen all den bekannten New Yorker Make up Artisten und Stylisten und natürlich den Models. Meine Angst war aber unbegründet, denn das Team ist wie eine große, herzliche Familie und ich habe mich sofort wohlgefühlt. Als ich angefangen habe, die Models zu tannen, war ich in meinem Element und hatte total viel Spaß bei der Arbeit.

Nach der Show war ich extrem müde. Ich bin nicht mal mehr zur After-Show-Party gegangen, sondern sofort in mein Bett gefallen und eingeschlafen. Am nächsten Morgen, als ich aufwachte, waren meine Hände durch das Bräunungsmittel, das ich am Abend zuvor den Models aufgetragen hatte, so braun wie nie zuvor.

Juliastreetstyleblog: Fühlst du immer noch das gleiche, nachdem du jetzt schon einige Shows miterlebt hast?
Katie: Ich bin nicht annähernd so aufgeregt, wie vor meiner ersten Show. Ich freue mich darauf, die ganzen Visagisten, Stylisten und Models wiederzusehen. Jeder ist glücklich, dort zu sein und es herrscht eine tolle Atmosphäre die ganze Zeit über. Alle haben das gleiche Ziel, was die Zusammenarbeit so einfach macht, um ein tolles Ergebnis zu bekommen. Das Umfeld ist zudem total interessant und glamourös. Ich liebe es, extra früh da zu sein, um mir die Dekoration des Laufstegs anzusehen und natürlich auch die Flügel, die die Models tragen werden. Ich liebe einfach alles daran. Jeder gibt alles in seinem Job.

Juliastreetstyleblog: Wie ist es für dich, mit den Angels zusammenzuarbeiten?
Katie: Ich liebe es! Alle sind so süß und geben dir das Gefühlt, die beste Arbeit in deinem Leben zu leisten und ein Teil des Glamours dieses besonderen Tages zu sein. Wenn die Models ihre Outfits schon anhaben und wir die letzten Handgriffe des Tannings beendet haben, herrscht eine ganz besondere Stimmung backstage. Es ist unglaublich!

Juliastreetstyleblog: Du hast schon so viel erreicht. Hast du weitere Ziele für die Zukunft?
Katie: Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich im Moment zu viele Ziele habe. Ich liebe es, Trainingsmaterialien für andere Tanner und Stylisten zu entwickeln. Mein Ziel ist es, meine Sammlung an Büchern, Videos und Programmen weiterzuentwickeln, um weiterzugeben, was ich an Erfahrungen um tausehende Spray Tans gemacht habe, weiterzugeben. Außerdem bin ich ständig dabei, meine Liste an Produkten zu erweitern und immer neue Techniken auszuprobieren, um Spray Tanning noch natürlicher wirken zu lassen. Genau das liebe ich!
